Franks' Clothing on Main next to Meshesy's Theater - above in pic At the age of eighteen years he determined that he would learn the mercantile business and, starting upon the search for a position, at length entered the store of which Frank Aikin was manager. This was an extensive establishment of Perryville, Kansas, but he did not make much headway there and removed to De Kalb, Missouri, where he secured a situation in the store of John S. Harmon, known as the "Missouri laugher." After two years spent in Mr. Harmon's employ he entered the service of a clothing firm in Atchison, Kansas, operating under the name of L. Frank. There he received only twenty-five dollars a month at the beginning and from that sum had to pay for room, board and clothing. He continued in the house for four years and then the offer of a better salary in a larger store caused him to change his position. Fourteen years were spent in the new connection, during which time his industry and careful expenditure enabled him to acquire a sufficient capital to engage in business on his own account. Accordingly, on the 28th of March, 1900, he opened a men's clothing, furnishings and hat store in Salt Lake City, Utah, at No. 128 South Main street. The enterprise was fairly successful from the beginning and three years later more commodious quarters were secured at a better location, No. 154 Main street. His success in the new store was very flattering, but after two years Mr. Gray found it necessary to leave Salt Lake because of his wife's health, and in searching for a location on the Pacific coast decided upon Portland. He then secured a lease in the Blumauer building, at Nos. 269 and 271 Morrison street, and equipped what was probably the finest store on the coast at the time. He opened his doors for business on the 23d of March, 1905, and the establishment found immediate favor with the people, a men's general clothing business being conducted with gratifying nrosperity for four years. At the end of that time Mr. Gray decided to establish an exclusive shop for men's and women's tailored clothes, such as would be a pride to the country, and his present establishment is the result.

Mom and Pop Stores - Making butter

Sunday, Jan.23, 2011 2011 Facebook...
How is everyone this fine Sunday morning? The sun is shining and I started my day with coffee and blueberry muffins filled with juicy berries. On to reading the Sunday paper, taking notes of activities and things I want to check out. Chloe is at her other Grandma's, spent the night and celebrating her BD and Josie is here.

Josie wants to learn to make butter and lo and behold, there was an article explaining it - you use a food processor or a jar and a marble!!

This week has brought back memories of an earlier time and food, of course. My son and I went to the Conoco's / Stimson's in West Valley. I worked there for seven years and 11 in Layton. If you have never eaten potato logs, you won't know what all the fuss was about? It is a slice of a large potato dipped in - like Colonel Sanders, a special breading and deep fat-fried making it soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, lather on the sour cream and eat; C, J, and M did just that while growing up. Anyway, Jay forgot to buy some and went back later. He said they weren't as good as Mom's, even in a store?... Has to make me feel good. Ha Forward to I am on the Trax... One guy is talking about the DI in Ogden. Other guy says," I haven't been to Ogden in years. I remember eating potato logs with sour cream at Stimson's!"

"Writers' Life" website - Who do you hang with? Barstool test

http://www.awaionline.com/2006/05/the-golden-thread/ http://www.awaionline.com/2011/01/no-fear "No Fear in Thought" doesn't work because you're expecting the impossible. You're waiting to act until your fear goes away, but that won't happen. At least, not until you've confronted what's making you fearful — until you've taken action. "No Fear in Action" works because you're looking your fear in the face and proving to it that it can't control you Guillermo Rubio here – taking over The Writer’s Life for the week. It’s a popular saying in self-help circles. But it’s extremely true. That is, you are the sum total of the 5 people you spend the most time with. The logic here is simple. Want to be rich? Start hanging out with rich people. Want to lose weight? Start making friends with folks who value their health and fitness. Want to be a great copywriter? Hang out with other copywriters who are in the field working. The idea is that by hanging out with these people, some of their beliefs, habits and actions that make them who they are will seep into your life.

Remember the “barstool test” I mentioned earlier? It’s all about writing the way you’d talk to a friend … over a drink … at a bar. Forget the big words, the flowery language … the dramatic prose …

The barstool test is one of the most powerful secrets for writing great sales letters, because it ensures a strong, personal rapport with your reader. That’s why one of the first things you’ll learn when you take the AWAI program is to forget everything you’ve learned about traditional writing … and just write the way you’d talk to a friend about something you’re passionate about!

In one of my favorite books, "The Greatest Salesman in the World," Og Mandino writes:

"My dreams are worthless, my plans are dust, my goals are impossible. All are of no value unless they are followed by action. I will act now."

I don't know if you'll enjoy the same kind of glicken I've received, but I can promise you this.

Forget what you've done up until now. Take consistent action toward your goal of the writer's life. Press on toward that goal, and you will win.
